Whales up close and personal

This week I took a whale watching cruise. The weather was calm and the trip out through Sydney Heads was thrilling! We searched from 10km offshore for any whales. We did see a school of dolphins surfing beside our boat.

Just as we had given up hope, we spotted some humpbacks. The captain cut the engines an the whales swam up to the boat to investigate. We made a lot of noise and put on a show for them. They reciprocated by blowing air, making noises, looking at us from the surface. They flipped their tails, rolled and swam with one fin in the air. This is known as a “mugging”. They hung around for more than half an hour.

Unfortunately, we had to head back to Sydney so we left them there. It was an amazing experience and one I will remember.
