Dr Yunupingu

A state funeral was held this weekend for Dr Yunupingu (The family has requested that in line with Yolngu cultural protocols that the first names of the deceased are not to be used until further notice.) in the Northern Territory. Kevin Rudd attended and it was open to everyone.

He was the first Indigenous school principal in Australia. He introduced a ground breaking method of teaching both Aboriginal and western education – both ways.

He was the first Aboriginal territorial to gain a university degree.
